New viruses are created and distributed every day. Virus protection software such as McAfee VirusScan, works with virus definition files to detect and remove viruses. To be effective, the virus definitions must be updated frequently.
A minute or two after they installed with no error messages, and update history indicated the updates were all successful , the shield shows up again indicating the SAME updates were ready to be installed. Thinking maybe it might have been updates to the updates, I went ahead and installed those, and everything again installed successfully.
Then once again, the shield shows up with the SAME updates. At this point I turned automatic updates off and ran "Fix-it", which did find a problem with automatic updates and said it was fixed. Turned auto updates back on. Shield immediately shows up again with the same 3 updates. Anybody else with Win XP having this problem. If so, how do you stop the updates from repeating?

In the meantime, you can hide these updates if you find the reminder annoying but don't forget to unhide and download them later. Cookiegal said:. I can't even confirm there is supposed to be a kb update for XP home, because I have been unable to locate any detailed documentation about this "thing" that the yellow security shield seems to think is an important update.
