Below, I list a summary of the pros as well of the cons of the TurboTax software. TurboTax offers a free version as well as three paid versions. You only qualify for the free version if your tax return is extremely simple. TurboTax is an incredible tool with an interface designed to legally maximize your deductions and credits. But like any tool, it is only as good as the skill and knowledge of the person using it. So yes, TurboTax can get you the largest tax refund to which you are legally obligated -- assuming you use it correctly.
This depends entirely on your own tax situation. If your tax return can be prepared from just a few documents, then you could be done with the entire process in ten minutes or so. However, if you have multiple tax documents, rental properties, or your own business, the tax return preparation process can take hours. If you use TurboTax, you can be confident that you will be using a premium, easy-to-use product that will take most of the pain out of preparing your tax return.
That said, it comes at a high price point and has a habit of upselling its more robust features that you may not actually need. The choice is up to you, but keep in mind that there are other tax preparation options available to you. TurboTax is also very forgiving when you fail to fill in something, such as missing the dollar amount when noting what's in your NEC.
However, one wonders why such things are not more automated, such as transferring your NEC info right out of the actual stub. In fact, TurboTax Online does offer an ability to snap a picture of a NEC and have it automatically populate your filing, a new feature this year in the Self-Employed version.
That feature is mentioned prominently both on the site and in the mobile app, but ZDNet searched in vain to find the place to snap a picture of the NEC. This is a potential problem of the online edition. New features are updated at various times, and within TurboTax's very rich offering, some features seem to be either not available early in tax season or buried, like the NEC photo option.
Both times, an automated support response tried to redirect to some online literature, but that didn't solve the problem. The key in this case is to tell the automated attendant, "I want to speak to a person," whereupon you'll be passed to a tax pro. The tax pro was not, in this case, able to solve the mystery of the NEC feature, suggesting that it has yet to be rolled out.
Somehow, TurboTax needs to do a better job of surfacing these kinds of features and making sure they're available when they're heavily marketed. The presentation of the user interface in the online product is one of the best around, with simple, straightforward descriptions of tax concepts, such as depreciation versus expensing, that can clarify some of the mystery of the process.
The company needs to be careful, however, not to advertise a million features that don't easily show up when people expect to use them, such as automatically scanning NECs. Also, some of the costs are buried in the fine print and can be confusing, so scroll through the entire page and read carefully.
